The Sudanese genocide can technically be called an auto-genocide. An auto-genocide is a genocide were the attacking group is harming their own people. This genocide started back in 1989 when General Omar Bashir took over Sudan. At first the mass murders, rapes, & pillages were just in Darfur. Compared to the whole country of Sudan Darfur is quite small, it is about the size of France & contains around 100 tribes along with six million people. The overall population is 36,000,000. Fourteen years after Bashir seized control two rebelling groups appeared. They are the the Sudan Liberal Army (SLA) & Justice & Equality Movement (JEM). After their appearance the government stated waging war against them. Resulting in the government killed over 300,000 & displaced 3 million people in 2003. As the years go by more deaths & damage has fallen upon Sudan. The government will send the Janjaweed militia out to kill & destroy the ones that go against them. Most of the time they can be seen on horseback with guns ready to kill anyone that gets in their way. With the new government being led by Bashir, Ahmad Harun, & Ali Kushayb over 100 people die in a day. That’s close to 5,oo0 people a month. Than in 2005 the International Criminal Court (ICC) steps in to investigate the violations of human rights in Darfur. Four years later on March fourth the arrest warrants went out for Bashir, Harum, & Kushayb to this day none of these men have been arrested. For years the horrible crimes continued. Than in 2011 a treaty was signed by the North & South making South Sudan its own country. Doing this did nothing to help the Darfuri or the Sudanese people all it did was cause issues over the new borders. In May of that year South Sudan was invaded causing the displacement of 113,000 people. Different areas of Sudan have been attacked now. For instance the Nuba Mountains bombed forcing the civilians just so the government could search for oil. The Nuba Mountains were & are not the only place to be attacked. There is also the South Kordofan & Blue Nile do to the fact that the border the newly founded countries. With all the different attacks by tanks, bombs, & the militias the North & South Sudan are left in famine.
On top of all this the people of Sudan have trouble getting help. The Sudanese laws make it almost impossible for the victims of the genocide to have access to humanitarian aid. It is not only hard for the people still trapped in North & South Sudan. It is also hard for the ones that have managed to escape too. As it is now the refugee aid camps are overcrowded people, some camps can have up to 100,000 people. With that many people the camps are running out of supplies fast & they are also in dire need of doctors. When the people of Sudan do manage to escape the tend to be half starved to death & or injured in some way. This is usually due to the attacks by the Janjaweed, bombings by their own government. At the moment the survivors of the Sudanese genocide are drinking dirty water that just helps make their health weaken even more. The more they drink the iller they get. Within these camps there is a high risk of fatal diarrhea especially in children five years of age or younger. Many of the camps have run out of food & are now relying on what little plant life that is available. As time goes on an even scarier threat approaches; the rainy season. Almost all roads to the refugee camps will be submerged under water. Now it has become a race against time to help the people of Sudan.
